Ray "Voodoo" Tatum was a state championship winning quarterback from Louisiana. His family moved to Texas after Hurricane Katrina and he was illegally recruited to the Dillon Panthers after Buddy Garrity convinced Eric Taylor that the team needed a star quarterback to replace Jason Street after he was injured. Voodoo was being recruited by several teams in Texas.

Voodoo struggled to integrate with the team, at times acting cocky, and arrogant, and like he didn't care about being in Texas or playing for the Panthers. He told Coach Taylor that all he wants to do is get recruited to LSU, and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Coach Taylor starts him in the game against Arnett Meade, but when Voodoo refuses to listen to Coach and begins to do what he wants, Coach benches him and puts Matt Saracen back in as starter, permanently. Afterwards, questions begin to arise about Voodoo's eligibility to play. Buddy tries to hide the truth, and is successful. Later, Buddy informs Coach that Voodoo left town, and went back to New Orleans, but told a reporter about the recruiting violations before he left.

It isn't until the end of the season that we learn that Voodoo has not gone back to New Orleans, but was recruited by another team in Texas. The same team that the Panthers play and defeat in the State Championship game. Coach Taylor's response to this news: "Go figure."
